Essential Fire
Safety Tips

Small steps make a big difference. Follow these guidelines to keep your home and family safe — tips recommended by Station 67 firefighters.

01

Test Smoke Alarms Monthly

Press the test button on every smoke detector in your home once a month. Replace batteries at least once a year — or switch to 10-year sealed units.

02

Plan Two Exits Per Room

Every bedroom needs at least two escape routes. Practice your fire drill twice a year with your whole household — including children and elderly members.

03

Never Leave Cooking Unattended

Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires. Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling. Keep flammable items away from the stovetop.

04

Know How to Use an Extinguisher

Remember PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. Keep a ABC-rated extinguisher on every level of your home.
